You must have obtained a first estimate. Without a written estimate, they may very well screw you all they want.

Do not really understand all the information you gave, but what I can tell you is that you should receive an estimate from the contractor until the job is done. If you have not received a FREE QUOTE and then stop all work immediately and another contractor!
